We made gazpacho for the first time this week, ate the whole giant bowl, and immediately made another batch the next day. Summer vegetables are what make farming worth it, and our local products are as fresh as they come. Our farmers harvest for you on Friday and Saturday morning, so when you get your order, know that it came out of the ground 48 hours ago, AT MOST! Fresh, local, delicious – can’t beat that!
Please remember as you order that per the POA’s instructions, we cannot leave your food unattended. If you need us to deliver to your neighbor or slip your order inside your house, please be sure to tell us in the comments so we can make sure your order gets to you safely!
If you have other suggestion about how we can continue to make deliveries without being able to leave products unattended, we’d love to hear them. We’re still developing the best ways to get your orders to you, and we welcome any of your ideas.
As always, if you enjoy being a member of Big Canoe Harvest, tell your friends! The more the market grows, the more additional vendors and products we’ll be able to include. As always, your feedback help shapes the market. Let us know what you think about the Big Canoe Harvest products.
Have a wonderful week, and we’ll see you Saturday!

With so many delicious vegetables available on the market, we want to share some of our favorite recipes as inspiration for how to enjoy them. This week, enjoy a refreshing Grilled Vegetable Salad. While the recipe below is vegetarian, it would be simple to grill a chicken breast or a filet of fish to serve with the salad. If you have favorite recipes you would like to share that include ingredients found on our market, please email them to orders@bigcanoeharvest.com, and we’ll include them in future emails!

Recipes

Grilled Vegetable Salad
Serves 2 as a main course, 4 as a side salad

Pair this salad with a light, bone-dry French rose – we suggest a bottle of Juliette Provence Rose (on sale this week at IGA for less than $10, an incredible deal!)

Salad
½ Pound of Bush Beans
1 bunch Scallions
½ pound of meaty Mushrooms
4-6 ounces of Sweet Peppers
1 head Radicchio
1 tbsp Olive Oil
1 handful of toasted sliced almonds
Small handful of an Herb of your choice, chopped – parsley, basil, or dill are all good options

Dressing
1 tbsp acid of choice – lemon juice, cider vinegar, or wine vinegar, etc
1 tbsp Dijon Mustard
3 tbsp Olive Oil
Salt
Pepper

1. Preheat grill for 10 minutes on high with cover down.
2. Prepare your vegetables: Trim the bush beans. Cut roots off scallions. Remove tough ends of mushrooms. Thinly slice peppers. Chiffonade radicchio.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together acid and Dijon mustard, and then slowly drizzle in 3 tbsp of olive oil while continuing to whisk. Add salt and to taste. Add peppers and pepper radicchio to dressing and toss to combine.
4. Toss beans, scallions, and mushrooms in 1 tbsp olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
5. Grill vegetables over direct heat for 3-5 minutes. Turn occasionally – you want a good crispy, tender texture. If you don’t want to use a grill, vegetables can be cooked under a broiler. Set the top rack as closed to the broiler as possible and arrange vegetables on a cookie sheet. Broil for 2-5 minutes, or until lightly charred.
6. Cut grilled scallions into bite sized pieces. Add grilled vegetables, almonds, and chopped herbs to bowl with dressing and toss to combine. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

We have a variety of tomatoes, squashes, and eggplant – everything you need for a summer ratatouille – and enough lettuces, microgreens, and crisp veggies for a perfect salad. If there is produce you want that you can’t find in our market, let us know! We’ll do our best to source it locally and bring it to you as soon as it’s ready.
If you haven’t seen the article about our market in this month’s Smoke Signals, be sure to check it out! We’re so happy to be a part of such a special community as Big Canoe.

Happy 4th of July! We are open this week, though a few of our vendors are taking the holiday off. The market is chock full of summer vegetables, exactly what you need to celebrate the holiday weekend deliciously.
Talking Rock HoneyBee Farm says that the honey listed here on the market is the last they will have available anywhere until the sourwood honey comes in. If you’ve held off on ordering, best to get your honey order in while you can.
When you pick up your copy of the July issue of Smoke Signals, look for an article about Big Canoe Harvest! We’re excited to expand our market throughout the community, and we are deeply grateful to each and every one of you who have shared your experiences, both in person and on Facebook.

Market News

Happy Tuesday! Summer is really getting started here at Big Canoe Harvest. So many delicious summer veggies are beginning, from squash to cucumbers to volleyball sized cabbages!
The Big Canoe POA reached out to us this week. They believe our service offers great benefit to the community (and we agree), but they are officially requesting that we no longer leave food unattended, even in a cooler. To be honest, we agree with the POA – we are always very concerned with the quality of our products when there is no one there to receive it.
So, this leaves you with a couple of options when it comes to delivery:
1. Be there! This is our favorite option, because we love to meet you when we make the deliveries.
2. Leave your door unlocked, with a cooler inside. We understand privacy, and we will respect your space by only going in far enough to leave the delivery. Eddy and I are the only ones making deliveries, so there’s no need to worry about random strangers.
3. Make arrangements to leave your order with a neighbor. Make sure your neighbor knows to expect us between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM on Saturdays. We are still streamlining our delivery service, so we cannot really give specific times.
When you make your order, if you plan on being there, great! If you need to give us special directions or tell us where to take your order, please tell us in the comments. In light of these changes, if we make your delivery and you are not home, we will no longer be able to leave your order unattended. If we have to make a second trip to your house, the delivery fee will be $5 instead of $2.
If anyone has another suggestion about how we can continue to make deliveries without being able to leave products unattended, we’d love to hear them. We’re still developing the best ways to get your orders to you, and we welcome any of your ideas.
This week we are excited to welcome two new vendors to Big Canoe Harvest.
The first is Southern Grass Meat. Some of you may remember them from the Potts Mountain Farmers Market. We here at Big Canoe Harvest aren’t set up for meat deliveries yet (but we’re working on it), and so Southern Grass Meat’s vegetables will be what’s available through our market. We got the opportunity to tour their farm this week, and boy are we impressed with their set up! This week they have some of the most ENORMOUS cabbages we’ve ever seen, and their onions are so sweet and delicious we’ll be ordering them for ourselves.
Our second new vendor is Jen’s Elderberry Syrup. They are a small family business born from a passion for natural wellness and quality food for their family. Jen was an ICU nurse for 10 years before becoming a mama to her two adorable boys, so she’s deeply invested in safely creating and handling their elderberry syrup. We are big fans of elderberries and their health benefits at Big Canoe Harvest, so we are really excited to bring their products to Big Canoe.
As always, if you enjoy being a member of Big Canoe Harvest, tell your friends! The more the market grows, the more additional vendors and products we’ll be able to include. As always, your feedback help shapes the market. Let us know what you think about the Big Canoe Harvest products.

Happy Tuesday! We are opening a little earlier this week, by request of many customers. Let us know what you think about the earlier opening time.
This week we are excited to welcome two new vendors to Big Canoe Harvest.
The Flip Farm is located in Stone Mountain, Georgia and specializes in turning previously unutilized suburban yards as fertile farmland. This week they are bringing us the first summer zucchini and some delicious tender collards.
Some of you may be familiar with our other new vendor this week, Talking Rock HoneyBee Farm. In addition to harvesting honey from the bees at their farm in Talking Rock, they also partner with Gibbs Gardens, where they produce some hyper-local raw honey that is VERY popular with visitors. They also have chicken eggs this week, and they tell us they will have duck and turkey eggs in the future.
Twisted Pastry is back from vacation this week, with their super yummy deserts and quick breads. If you haven’t tried their Banana Pudding yet, you are missing out!
Connie’s Cornucopia is excited to announce that their salad mix containers are now made of USDA certified, plant-based compostable material made in the US. Their natural, sustainable methods of seed-to-seal food production brings you high quality, fresh taste, and real nutrition. Among their delicious greens this week, they also have Cucumbers! Summer is just getting started here at Big Canoe Harvest!
Loud Mouth Farms has Blue Oysters and Cinnamon Caps this week, as well as the Farm Mix. We LOVE the Farm Mix here at Big Canoe Harvest, because we get excited about the different varieties. If you haven’t tried their mushrooms yet (or especially if you have!) add some of their products to your shopping cart this week.
Tumble Tree Farm brings delicious Zephyr Summer Squash this week, as well as an assortment of delicious fresh herbs like parsley, dill, cilantro, and basil. As always, their microgreens are perfect for sprucing up salads, sandwiches, and pretty much anything else you add them to.
We’re hearing whispers that we might have tomatoes next week, so keep your eyes peeled!
As always, if you enjoy being a member of Big Canoe Harvest, tell your friends! The more the market grows, the more additional vendors and products we’ll be able to include. As always, your feedback help shapes the market. Let us know what you think about the Big Canoe Harvest products.

Market News

Welcome to June! As we round the curve into late spring, new products will begin to enter the market. One of the most enjoyable things about local food is experiencing the seasonality – enjoy everything that is ripe and delicious now, because what is available will change from week to week.

Folks have been asking about other vendors, and we’re working on bringing in eggs, honey, and yeasted breads. We’ve been chasing down leads, but honey folks are just gearing up for the year, and all of the egg vendors we’ve found are expanding their flocks to meet increased demand, but aren’t there yet in terms of production. If you know a local farmer who has these products in large numbers, put them in touch with us!

On your account, please make sure we have a good number where we can reach you on delivery day. If you aren’t home, we need to be able to coordinate delivery. Due to weather and wildlife, we can’t leave your delivery unattended.

As always, if you enjoy being a member of Big Canoe Harvest, tell your friends! The more the market grows, the more additional vendors and products we’ll be able to include. As always, your feedback help shapes the market. Let us know what you think about the Big Canoe Harvest products.

We hope you all had an enjoyable and meaningful Memorial Day weekend! As we round the curve into late spring and June, new products will begin to enter the market. One of the most enjoyable things about local food is experiencing the seasonality – enjoy everything that is ripe and delicious now, because what is available will change from week to week.

If you haven’t tried mushrooms from Loud Mouth Farms last week, put some in your basket this week! Their Farm Mix is a good place to start, giving you an assortment of what they have available. These mushrooms are a MILE away from the sad ‘shrooms at the grocery store – Loud Mouth Farms’ mushrooms are picked right before delivery, fresh, tender, and scrumptious.

Connie’s Cornucopia has a wide variety of delicious greens and herbs, including some varieties you might not have tried before. Their Mizuna, a peppery Asian green, is a delightful addition to any salad, and if you’re looking for fresh, pungent herbs, their products are the way to go. During packing last week, the dill perfumed our entire workspace and made us wish we had some Tom’s Seafood salmon to go with it!

Tumble Tree Farm has several new products this week, including sugar snap peas, English shelling peas, and Japanese salad turnips. These specialty turnips are small and tender, the size of radishes, with all of the crunch and none of the spicy heat of a radish. They are perfect for eating raw in a salad or lightly roasting in the oven. Think you don’t like turnips? Give these a try.

Twisted Pastry is on vacation this week and next, but they will be back on the week of June 8th.
